People talk a lot about time. They never seem to have enough. They are too busy. They have stress. And, they hurry to say, You have no idea.
I have an idea! I felt that and even said these words.
But one thing is safe to say, for me, when it’s important I find the time.
I talked to a friend, years ago, about the feeling of overwhelm. I had so many things to do, in business as well as in private. Of course, I am worried that I did not have enough time with my partner. My friend challenged my time worries, and I kept track of my time for a week.
The idea was to realise that I did more than I felt I do.
The result was that I spent more time with my partner than I thought. I had prioritised her all along. And the fact is that we are going to make time for things that are important.
We want to spend time with our family. We want to spend time on the job, because it provides income for our family.
No matter what you want to do, the time is there. It is up to you to say yes to one thing and no to something else.
Even during the busiest times, I managed to find time to swim, bike and run for 15-20 hours each week. It is possible.
But it worked because I’ve prioritised along the way. It worked because I said no to many other things. That also happened around the time I worried; And yet I did have time for my partner.
I’m not saying it’s easy, but it’s pretty darn simple.
Everyone is busy. We still find the time for whatever.
Somehow we manage to find the time when something important happens.
When a friend is in the hospital, we find time to visit. When neighbours need help, we find time to support. When a parent calls, we find time to talk. When a new season of our favourite show comes out, we find time to watch each episode.
The real question is never, where can I find the time? The question is, What is important to me? But we do not always ask this question.
As you say yes to one thing, you say no to another, understand that’s a good thing.
Here are some examples to find time, which helped me. You can, of course, translate that to your needs.
Rewrite your to-do list every day.
If you spend the time on re-write a page ten times, it may not be as important, and you should separate it from the list.
Get specific and assign everything in time measures. If you choose that re-writing a page is important, find out how long it takes.
Note, adding ten minutes for every 30 you think it will need. We always underestimate.
Plan it. If the page takes an hour, adjust it to your schedule. Do not try to put things around other things. You will never get something important this way.
Protect it. As soon as the watch is running on a project, try to avoid interruptions.
Do not check the emails on your phone.
Do not review Instagram.
Stay off Facebook.
Give the project what it needs.
And take the advice my friend gave me. Track your time for a week. Write down what you do each day in 20-minute increments.
When you do, you get real data and not how you feel. It will show you some things very clear. Your time has a limit. You waste a lot. You can’t-do all you would imagine. But ….
You will find the time for what counts. You will always do.
